MT – A New Tool in the Translator's Toolbox?

Machine translation and post-editing have been the talk of the town in the translation industry for several years now. It would appear that everyone wants to get on the MT train – LSPs are frantically looking for domain-specific data, training new engines or writing post-editing guidelines. But sometimes it appears that a crucial voice is missing. What is the role of the translator in this process? Are translators merely the final piece of the MT puzzle resigned to missing out on any potential benefits of MT and condemned to occasional rants on various internet forums? In this presentation, we will take a look at machine translation and post-editing from a translator’s point of view. We will assess the current state of MT on the market, explore post-editing guidelines and techniques and discover tools and services that allow individual translators to take advantage of MT.
